What is Encaustic Painting?
Encaustic painting is a unique and ancient technique that involves using heated beeswax mixed with pigments to create artworks. The term “encaustic” comes from the Greek word “enkaustikos,” which means “to burn in.” This technique dates back over 2,000 years and has been used by various civilizations throughout history, including ancient Greece and Egypt.
The process of encaustic painting typically involves melting beeswax and damar resin and combining it with pigments to create a colored wax medium. This wax is then applied to a surface, such as wood, canvas, or even paper. The wax can be manipulated with various tools and brushes while it’s still in a liquid or molten state.
To “fuse” the layers and create a durable artwork, a heat source, such as a heat gun or a blowtorch, is used to melt and fuse the wax layers together. This “burning in” process helps to bond the layers, providing stability and longevity to the artwork.
Artists can create smooth, translucent layers of paint or build up textures and incorporate mixed media elements within their encaustic artworks. The molten wax can also be manipulated to create intricate details, drips, and unique surface effects.
One of the advantages of encaustic painting is its versatility. The paint can be used with various materials like oil paints, pigments, inks, collage elements, and even photographs, allowing artists to explore and experiment with different techniques and effects.
Encaustic artworks have a distinct and luminous quality due to the translucency of the wax layers. The wax also provides a natural protective barrier to the artwork, making it resistant to moisture and aging.
What is cold wax painting?
Cold wax painting is a technique that involves using a mixture of cold wax medium and oil paints to create artworks. Unlike traditional encaustic painting, which uses heated wax, cold wax painting does not require heat. Cold wax medium is a dense paste made from beeswax, mineral spirits, and a resin. Cold wax painting offers a unique approach to oil-based art, providing artists with the opportunity to explore texture, layering, and a wide range of techniques.
