Damar is a hard natural resin that comes from a family of deciduous trees that grow in the East Indies. In encaustic paint damar resin is the most common ingredient for hardening the beeswax and raising its melting temperature. Damar allows the wax to be buffed to a higher, more translucent surface and helps prevent blooming in the wax.

Damar resin can also be used for:
Damar varnish – dissolve the resin in turpentine
Final varnish – tempera or oil paintings
Oil paint medium – add to oil paint for transparent glossy glazes.

To use the damar in making your own encaustic medium, it must be melted in the beeswax and strained. A common mix is 5-8 parts beeswax to 1 part Damar, you will need to experiment to find what works best for you. This medium can be mixed with dry pigments to make your own encaustic paints or used to thin and or extend ready made encaustic wax.
